For him, the irregular verbs in the Pret\u00e9rito Indefinido (Past Tense) were just something he couldn\u2019t understand, so he wrote me a few lines asking me for some tips. As this week, I also had a class with one of my students, working on the same topic, I decided I was going to spend some time answering all your prayers about the irregularities of the verbs in the Pret\u00e9rito Indefinido in Spanish.\u00a0<\/i><\/p><p>The past tense has many names in Spanish. It is called \u201cpret\u00e9rito\u201d, \u201cpret\u00e9rito indefinido\u201d, \u201cindefinido\u201d, \u201cpasado simple\u201d\u2026 I will call it\u00a0<i>Indefinido.<\/i><\/p><p>This tense is used to talk about the past in Spanish. We used to talk about actions accomplished in a\u00a0<b>particular<\/b>\u00a0moment in the<b>\u00a0past<\/b>.<\/p><p>\u2013\u00a0El a\u00f1o pasado\u00a0mis padres y yo\u00a0nos mudamos\u00a0a nuestra nueva casa. \u2013<i>\u00a0Last year, my parents and I moved to our new house.<\/i><\/p><p>So, the action (mudarse = \u2018to move\u2019) was accomplished, finished in an specific time in the past (el a\u00f1o pasado = \u2018last year\u2019). We also use the pret\u00e9rito indefinido to express an action that happens in the past, occurs in the middle of other action.<\/p><p>\u2013 Justo cuando est\u00e1bamos pas\u00e1ndolo mejor,\u00a0tuvo\u00a0que irse.\u00a0<i>\u2013 Right when we were having more fun, he had to go.<\/i><\/p><p>As you can see, there are two actions: one extended in time (pasarlo bien = \u2018have fun\u2019) and one that happens in the middle of the previous one (tener que irse = \u2018have to go\u2019). Verbs with an irregular root:<\/p><p>Note!!!\u00a0<i>Traer<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Decir<\/i>\u00a0drop the \u201c-i-\u201c. In the form of they (ellos, ellas) we say \u201c<b>traj<\/b><b>eron<\/b>\u201d and \u201c<b>dij<\/b><b>eron<\/b>\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9da134b e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"9da134b\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b6d9b80 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b6d9b80\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Some more irregularities\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cb997ea elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cb997ea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><b>Verbs ending by\u00a0<\/b><b>-ducir<\/b><b>\u00a0in the infinitive (like \u201cproducir\u201d, \u201cconducir\u201d, \u201ctraducir\u201d)\u00a0<\/b><b>C &gt; J<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p>The \u201cc\u201d in the root becomes \u201cj\u201d.<\/p><p><i>\u2013 Conducir: Condu<\/i><b><i>j<\/i><\/b><i>e, condu<\/i><b><i>j<\/i><\/b><i>iste, condu<\/i><b><i>j<\/i><\/b><i>o, condu<\/i><b><i>j<\/i><\/b><i>imos, condu<\/i><b><i>j<\/i><\/b><i>isteis, condu<\/i><b><i>j<\/i><\/b><i>eron.<\/i><\/p><ul><li><b><\/b><b>Verbs that have an \u201c-i-\u201d between vowels with the verbs that en in \u201c-er\u201d and \u201c-ir\u201d in the infinitive, change the \u201ci\u201d for a \u201cy\u201d in the 3rd person of the singular (he\/she) and of the plural (they).<\/b><b>\u00a0I &gt; Y<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p><i>\u2013 Leer: Le-<\/i><b><i>i<\/i><\/b><i>\u00f3<\/i><i>\u00a0&gt; Le<\/i><b><i>y<\/i><\/b><i>\u00f3 \/ Le-<\/i><b><i>i<\/i><\/b><i>e<\/i><i>ron &gt; Le<\/i><b><i>y<\/i><\/b><i>eron<\/i>\u00a0<i>\u2013 Contruir: Construy\u00f3 \/ Construyeron<\/i>\u00a0<i>\u2013 Oir: O<\/i><b><i>y<\/i><\/b><i>\u00f3 \/ O<\/i><b><i>y<\/i><\/b><i>eron<\/i><\/p><ul><li><b><\/b><b>Verbs ending by\u00a0<\/b><b>-zar<\/b><b>\u00a0in the infinitive (empezar, comenzar, cazar\u2026)\u00a0<\/b><b>Z &gt; C<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p>The \u201cz\u201d becomes \u201cc\u201d only in the 1st person singular (yo).<\/p><p><i>\u2013 Empezar: Empe<\/i><b><i>c<\/i><\/b><i>\u00e9, empezaste, empez\u00f3, empezamos, empezasteis, empezaron.<\/i><\/p><ul><li><b><\/b><b>Verbs ending by\u00a0<\/b><b>-car<\/b><b>\u00a0in the infinitive (sacar, aparcar\u2026)\u00a0<\/b><b>C &gt; QU<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p>The \u201cc\u201d in the rot becomes \u201cqu\u201d for the 1st person singular (yo).<\/p><p><i>\u2013 Sacar: Sa<\/i><b><i>qu<\/i><\/b><i>\u00e9, sacaste, sac\u00f3, sacamos, sacasteis, sacaron.<\/i><\/p><ul><li><b><\/b><b>Verbs ending by\u00a0<\/b><b>-gar<\/b><b>\u00a0(llegar, jugar\u2026)\u00a0<\/b><b>G &gt; GU<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p>The \u201cg\u201d in the root becomes \u201cgu\u201d in the 1st singular (yo).<\/p><p><i>\u2013 Llegar: Lle<\/i><b><i>gu<\/i><\/b><i>\u00e9, llegaste, lleg\u00f3, llegamos, llegasteis, llegaron.<\/i><\/p><ul><li><b><\/b><b>Verbs whose root end by \u201c-ll\u201d and \u201c-\u00f1\u201d (bullir, ta\u00f1er\u2026) won\u2019t have the \u201ci\u201d in the 3rd person of singular and plural.<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p><i>\u2013 Bullir: Bull<\/i><b><i>\u00f3<\/i><\/b><i>\u00a0(not\u00a0<\/i><i>bulli\u00f3<\/i><i>) \/ Bulleron<\/i><\/p><ul><li><b><\/b><b>Some verbs ending by \u201c-er\u201d and \u201c-ir\u201d in the infinitive change their vowel (<\/b><b>E &gt; I \/\/ O &gt; U<\/b><b>) in the 3rd person singular and plural. They are the same that change their vowel in the present of indicative<\/b>\u00a0(irregular verbs in the Present).<\/li><\/ul><p><i>\u2013 Pedir: Ped\u00ed, pediste, pidi\u00f3, pedimos, pedisteis, pidieron.<\/i>\u00a0<i>\u2013 Dormir: Dorm\u00ed, dormiste, durmi\u00f3, dormimos, dormisteis, durmieron.<\/i><\/p><p>Laura Tavares has created a nice\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/lauravtavares\/pretrito-indefinido\">presentation<\/a>\u00a0with more details and examples of the Indefinido irregularities and some practical exercises.
