{"id":203,"date":"2025-03-15T16:38:11","date_gmt":"2025-03-15T16:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mariaortegagarcia.com\/?p=203"},"modified":"2025-03-15T16:49:18","modified_gmt":"2025-03-15T16:49:18","slug":"poetry-for-confidence-accuracy-and-connection-in-spanish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mariaortegagarcia.com\/es\/spanish-blog\/poetry-for-confidence-accuracy-and-connection-in-spanish\/","title":{"rendered":"Poetry for Confidence, Accuracy and Connection in Spanish"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"203\" class=\"elementor elementor-203\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3030fa9 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"3030fa9\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-88f37a5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"88f37a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Journaling in my mother language led me to write poetry, an activity I loved but which I stopped doing because I was young and influenceable and I believed then that if I couldn\u2019t write good poetry (like the wordsmiths I studied in college), then I should not write at all.\u00a0<\/p><p>Then, as an English \/ French learner, I started journaling\u00a0and that led me to write poetry in a \u201cforeign\u201d language too.<\/p><p>Years after that first incursion in poetry, I learned that we are all artists and that\u00a0<b>we are all creative<\/b>\u00a0and that we have to use up that creativity. As Maya Angelou said:\u00a0<i>You can\u2018t\u00a0use\u00a0up creativity. The\u00a0more you use, the\u00a0more you have.<\/i><\/p><p>I also learnt that\u00a0being creative without purpose or an ending goal is a pleasure by itself and that\u00a0<b>pleasure is an end goal in itself.<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3b3eb95 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3b3eb95\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Turning Point in the Language Learning Process: Writing poetry<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-90426c2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"90426c2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Writing poetry in my target language, which at the time was English, was what made all the difference in the learning process.\u00a0<\/p><p>I have never been a very confident speaker but performing with my own poetry in slam poetry events helped me to understand my brain under pressure (speaking in public + speaking in a foreign language), how it manifests, the blocks I experienced and what I can do to overcome them.\u00a0<\/p><p>Then preparing to perform in these events improved my pronunciation, intonation, modulation and body language in order to create a connection with the audience.<\/p><p>Finally, writing\u00a0my own poetry\u00a0created a stronger bond with English, improved my vocabulary and brought more accuracy in my speech. Poetry is boned with ideas, nerved and blooded with emotions, all held together by the delicate, tough skin of words.\u201d \t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-q-footer\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"elementor-blockquote__author\">\u2014 Paul Engle<\/cite>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-48a3a0c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"48a3a0c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>We all know how words carry more than meaning, they have the power to convey ideas and emotions, to create thoughts and beliefs. Words are tools for communication and when used wrongly or inaccurately, miscommunication.\u00a0<\/p><p>The act of writing poetry forces you to look up words to find the exact term you need. This<b>\u00a0search for accuracy<\/b>\u00a0is what makes it so powerful. Any poet will tell you that having access to a dictionary and a thesaurus is essential for their craft.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5fbedb9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5fbedb9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Practise Makes Perfect<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-98e8ffa elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-blockquote--button-color-official elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"98e8ffa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoetry is emotion put into measure. The ability to communicate well is a skill, same goes with writing. Expressing emotion is a matter of practice too: one feels an emotion inadvertently but capturing that emotion (with words, movement\u2026) requires practice too.\u00a0<\/p><p><b>Expressing well requires practice.<\/b><\/p><p><b>Expressing accurately what we feel is an art.<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-38d04eb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"38d04eb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Calm after the Storm<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-db0e6aa elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-blockquote--button-color-official elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"db0e6aa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquillity.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-q-footer\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"elementor-blockquote__author\">\u2014 William Wordsworth<\/cite>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9d66867 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9d66867\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Learning a language through poetry is a powerful learning method because\u00a0<b>it anchors the language<\/b>.\u00a0 How? All<b>\u00a0learning is emotional<\/b>. In fact, Dr. Antonio Damasio has demonstrated that without emotions, no learning can take place. When we write poetry, the words we put into paper have been \u201cfelt\u201d first.<\/p><p>When we recall an event to put it in a poem, that event evokes emotion and this is what helps us anchor the words we search\/use in the process of describing it in a poem.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-528e69b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"528e69b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Creation of Rhythm<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9f9ff71 elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-blockquote--button-color-official elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"9f9ff71\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI would define \u2026 the Poetry of words as The Rhythmical Creation of Beauty.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-q-footer\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"elementor-blockquote__author\">\u2014 Edgar Allan Poe<\/cite>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7ce8e56 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7ce8e56\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>How the language sounds, the figures of speech that we use in everyday language, the alliterations, the repetitions\u2026 all these exist because\u00a0<b>sound and rhythm also carry meaning and generate emotion in the person we are speaking with<\/b>.\u00a0<\/p><p>We want the other person to relate to our message to generate an emotion in them. And this is what we achieve when we write poetry and get familiar and comfortable using figures of speech in our conversations.<\/p><p>Which sentence is more relatable?<\/p><ul><li><i><\/i><i>Me siento cansada. I feel tired,<\/i><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Me siento como si me hubiera pasado una apisonadora por encima.
