Case Study: Building confidence and reducing speaking anxiety in Spanish learners

Client Background

Julia, an experienced Spanish learner, reached out seeking support with a very specific challenge. Despite years of study, she struggled with severe anxiety when speaking the language. While she could read and understand Spanish reasonably well, the act of speaking triggered deep fears connected to childhood experiences of being judged or ridiculed.

In her own words:

“Hi I want help with speaking Spanish. I’ve been learning for years on and off I read understand reasonably well but I’m crippled by anxiety speaking even with my lovely teacher. I know it’s related to childhood, my fear of being stupid and being laughed at. I’ve tried lots of things and I’m still stuck! I’d love to just feel free to talk make mistakes and learn.”

Julia was not looking for traditional language lessons. Instead, she wanted guidance in building confidence, finding tools to manage her anxiety, and creating a more enjoyable and productive learning process.

Approach

Together, we developed an innovative, two-phase process that integrated therapeutic-style exploration with language learning.

Phase 1: Therapeutic Conversations and Reflective Practice

For the first 20 weeks, our focus was on building a safe and supportive environment where Julia could explore the roots of her anxiety and strengthen her inner confidence. This phase included:

  • Weekly conversations on topics such as confidence, self-esteem, the inner critic, belonging, authenticity, self-care, and the “inner child.”

  • Tailored reflective materials after each session, including:

    • Journaling prompts to encourage deep reflection without the pressure of immediate response.

    • Carefully selected poems or short texts to spark new insights and perspectives.

Julia worked with these materials at her own pace during the week, then shared her reflections in the following session. Together, we uncovered patterns, explored new perspectives, and identified themes for further work.

Phase 2: Integrating Spanish Practice

Once Julia had established stronger emotional resilience, we introduced personalized Spanish exercises into her reflective process. The goal was to connect language practice directly to her self-exploration, ensuring it felt meaningful and safe.

  • Integrated journaling prompts and grammar exercises: For example, while exploring her “inner narrative,” Julia received 10 reflective prompts, a poem by Ada Limón, and grammar practice exercises focused on the present tense, past tenses, and the subjunctive.

  • Level flexibility: Each exercise was offered at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, allowing Julia to choose her level of challenge and build confidence progressively.

  • Seamless blend of emotional and linguistic growth: Spanish practice became a natural extension of her reflective work rather than a separate, anxiety-inducing task.

Results

After more than 20 weeks, Julia has reported meaningful changes in both her confidence and her relationship with Spanish. She is better able to manage her anxiety, feels more empowered when speaking, and experiences her language learning as enjoyable and fulfilling.

Her testimonial captures her experience:

“María has been incredibly supportive, helping me overcome my anxiety and gain confidence in speaking Spanish. Her patience, encouragement, and tailored guidance have made learning enjoyable and empowering. I’m truly grateful for her unwavering support and dedication.”

Key Insights

  • Addressing the root is essential: Building confidence and emotional safety created the conditions for Julia to engage with Spanish in a healthier, more productive way.

  • Learning is most effective when personal: By tying grammar and vocabulary practice to Julia’s inner reflections, the language became more meaningful and less intimidating.

  • Innovation through integration: Combining therapeutic-style conversations, journaling, and poetry with structured Spanish exercises offers a unique and powerful method for language learners facing emotional barriers.

This case study demonstrates how a holistic approach, supporting both the learner’s emotional landscape and their language practice, can unlock progress where traditional teaching methods fall short.

If Julia’s story resonates with you, I’d love to support you on your journey too. Let’s work together to make language learning feel confident and joyful.
